Bernardo Silva Edges Closer to Etihad Exit as Benfica Reunion Beckons

Manchester City’s midfield maestro Bernardo Silva appears to be nearing the end of his spell at the Etihad Stadium, with strong indications that the Portuguese international could be set for a return to his boyhood club, Benfica. The 30-year-old, who has been a vital part of City’s dominance in English and European football, has reportedly been informed by the club that he is not part of their long-term plans.

Silva, who began his football journey at Benfica’s academy, has openly expressed his desire to return to the club that nurtured his talent. Having left the Lisbon side for Monaco in 2014, his potential return would mark an emotional homecoming after more than a decade abroad.

Benfica have already initiated talks with Silva’s representatives, exploring avenues to secure his signature. However, a major stumbling block remains: the €50 million (£42.6 million) release clause in Silva’s contract  a figure that exceeds Benfica’s financial capabilities. Despite this, efforts are underway to find a compromise, with influential agent Jorge Mendes actively involved in brokering a potential deal.

Silva’s current contract with City runs until 2026, following an extension signed in August 2023. That deal included a release clause that was considered modest in comparison to his market value. His contributions at City have been immense playing a pivotal role in multiple Premier League triumphs and the historic treble-winning campaign of 2022–23.

While Benfica is Silva’s preferred destination, other clubs remain in the hunt. Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly ready to meet his release clause, and clubs from Saudi Arabia have also shown interest. Nonetheless, Silva’s priority is a return to Portugal, indicating a move driven by personal sentiment rather than financial gain.

Should the deal go through, Silva’s arrival would provide a significant boost to Benfica’s ambitions both domestically and in Europe. His experience, vision, and versatility would be invaluable assets in their midfield.

As Manchester City prepares for a potential reshuffle in midfield  with uncertainties surrounding the futures of Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gündoğan  Silva’s departure could be the beginning of a new era at the Etihad.

Negotiations are ongoing, but there is growing optimism that Bernardo Silva will finally complete his dream return to Benfica a full-circle moment for one of Portugal’s finest talents.
