Andre Onana Fires Back at Nemanja Matic in Pre-Lyon Clash War of Words

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and former midfielder Nemanja Matic have become embroiled in a public war of words ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Lyon.

It all began when Onana, speaking after United's goalless draw with Manchester City, confidently assessed the upcoming tie by saying, "Of course it's not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them." The remark, while seemingly optimistic, was not well received by Matic, now a Lyon player, who responded sharply during a pre-match press conference.

Matic, surprised by the comment, did not hold back: “If you're one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history, then you need to take care of what you are talking about,” he said. “If David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar said that, I would question myself. But Onana? Pfttt.”

Matic’s jab was based on Onana’s inconsistent performances since joining United from Inter Milan for £47 million. While the Cameroon international has made some key saves and played a part in United’s FA Cup triumph last season, his save percentage of 70.09% is the lowest of any United goalkeeper with 20 or more Premier League appearances since 2003-04.

However, Onana wasted no time in issuing a response on social media. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

The dig was clearly aimed at Matic, who, despite playing five seasons at Old Trafford, failed to win a single major trophy with United. Matic did enjoy success at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and a League Cup, but his stint at United remained trophyless.

With tensions high and the Europa League representing United’s only realistic shot at silverware this season, the personal feud between the two players adds an intriguing subplot to Thursday’s first-leg clash. Whether Onana’s confidence will be matched by performance remains to be seen, but he has certainly made his voice heard on and off the pitch.
