Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has downplayed rumours of Neymar’s return to the club, stating that it is not his priority. While club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco are reportedly interested in bringing the Brazilian forward back, Flick has not requested his signing.
Neymar, who previously enjoyed a successful spell at Barcelona from 2013 to 2017, has struggled with injuries in recent years. His high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain failed to meet expectations, and his stint with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia was disastrous, with only seven appearances and one goal. Since returning to Santos in January, he has shown glimpses of his old form, scoring three times, reigniting speculation about a Camp Nou comeback.
However, Flick’s tactical approach at Barcelona relies heavily on high pressing and quick transitions, which Neymar may struggle to fit into due to his injury record and declining physicality. Current wingers Raphinha and Lamine Yamal have thrived under Flick’s system, providing energy and work rate that Neymar might not be able to match.
Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League clash with Benfica, Flick remained focused on the upcoming fixture rather than transfer speculation. “It’s not my job. I’m very focused on this team and on the season. The rest is the task of other people at the club, not mine,” he said.
Despite Neymar’s links to Barcelona in every transfer window, this time, there may be a real chance of a return. However, his ability to stay fit and perform consistently will be key factors in any potential deal. For now, Flick is prioritising Barcelona’s Champions League campaign, with all eyes on their showdown with Benfica.
