FC Barcelona’s La Liga clash against CA Osasuna was postponed on Saturday night following the unexpected passing of the club’s first-team doctor, Carles Miñarro García. The match, originally scheduled to kick off at 20:00 GMT at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, was called off just 20 minutes before the start, leaving fans in shock.
A Sudden Loss
Dr. Miñarro García, 53, had been with the club since 2017, initially working with the futsal team before joining the first-team staff last summer. His sudden passing deeply affected the squad, leading to a unanimous decision among the players and board members to request the postponement of the game.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed the club’s grief in an emotional statement:
“Carles was loved by everyone. As you can imagine, we are all extremely sad. He never said ‘No’ to anyone. He was a great professional and a great medic.”
Laporta also revealed that the club had immediately contacted Miñarro García’s family, offering support to his wife and two children, Gerard and Anna.
The Decision to Postpone
As fans filled the stadium, uncertainty grew when players did not emerge for their warm-up. Eventually, an announcement over the speakers confirmed the postponement, which was later displayed on the big screen. Barcelona’s statement read:
“FC Barcelona is deeply saddened to announce the passing of first-team doctor Carles Miñarro García this evening. For this reason, the match against CA Osasuna has been postponed to a later date.”
Osasuna also offered their condolences, stating:
“Osasuna wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Carles Miñarro García and would like to send a warm hug to all the staff of FC Barcelona, as well as to its fans, at this difficult time.”
Players Pay Tribute
Several Barcelona players took to social media to express their sorrow. Midfielder Dani Olmo shared:
“Carles, thank you very much for everything you have helped me with, not only this year, but throughout my entire career. You will always be remembered.”
Gavi, Pedri, and Ronald Araújo also paid tribute, with Araújo writing:
“Rest in peace, Doc. Sending strength to Carles’ family and friends. May God strengthen your hearts in this difficult time.”
What’s Next?
La Liga and Barcelona will determine a new date for the fixture. The postponement comes at a crucial time for the club, as they prepare to host Benfica in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg on March 11.
For now, Barcelona mourns the loss of a valued member of their team, prioritising respect and remembrance over football.
