Fabio Capello Questions Mbappé and Vinícius Partnership at Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello has expressed doubts over the on-field chemistry between Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr., questioning their ability to function effectively together in Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Despite impressive individual statistics, Capello believes their playing styles clash, limiting Madrid’s overall attacking cohesion.

After joining Madrid on a free transfer from PSG last summer, Mbappé’s arrival sparked debates over how Ancelotti would integrate him alongside Vinícius. The Brazilian has thrived on the left wing in recent years, a position where Mbappé also excels. To accommodate both stars, Ancelotti has deployed the Frenchman centrally. However, Capello remains unconvinced that this tactical shift has worked seamlessly.

“Mbappé and Vinícius Jr. play in the same position. They are stepping on each other and not performing well,” Capello told Flashscore. “As individuals, they can do things others can’t, but football is about team harmony.”

Despite this critique, Mbappé has delivered strong numbers in his debut season, scoring 28 goals in 41 appearances. Vinícius has contributed 18 goals in 37 matches. Yet, Capello argues that Madrid’s overall balance has suffered, particularly in midfield following Toni Kroos’s departure and in defence due to injuries.

Beyond Real Madrid, Capello also spoke about the challenges faced by ex-players transitioning into management. He highlighted Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, both of whom have struggled to find consistent success as coaches. While Gerrard shone at Rangers, his time at Aston Villa and Al Ettifaq was less impressive. Lampard, on the other hand, has revitalised Coventry City, transforming them from relegation candidates to playoff contenders.

“I noticed these two fantastic players, and I am sure that in the future they will be great managers. They have learnt from their early mistakes,” Capello said.

Capello also praised former players like Fabio Cannavaro, who is currently managing Dinamo Zagreb, emphasising the importance of coaching abroad to gain experience. He admires those willing to take risks, citing Cannavaro’s stints in China, Saudi Arabia, and now Croatia as proof of his dedication.

Reflecting on his own coaching influences, Capello credited Helenio Herrera for his intensity in training and Nereo Rocco for his direct approach. He also admired Nils Liedholm’s calm yet authoritative style, which subtly guided players while giving them a sense of freedom.

As Real Madrid chases silverware, the debate over Mbappé and Vinícius’ partnership remains open. Whether Ancelotti can unlock their full potential together will be key to the club’s success.
